The pictures are drawn by code

The nasi uduk, the sambal jar and the beat tape around this site are painted by small programs a person can read, never by an image model.

Each picture is a recipe: a short program that paints on a canvas, one shape at a time. Run it again and you get the same picture, down to the last speck.

Nasi uduk, painted by a recipe.

How a recipe paints

  • One light, from the top left, so every highlight and shadow agrees.
  • No perfect shapes: a plate or a jar wobbles a little, the way real ones do.
  • Texture from thousands of tiny marks rather than smooth gradients.
  • A table, a cloth or a mat under everything, then a little grain to finish.

Where you'll meet them

A template can start with one as a sample photo, so the page looks finished before you add your own. The Editor labels it “Sample photo: replace with yours”, and if your page takes orders, Carya asks before it publishes with one still on it.

They're there to get you started. The best photo on your page is still the one you take.

Say what it costs

A price on the page saves you a pile of how-much messages, and tells a buyer you're ready to sell.

Take the photo by a window

You don't need a studio to photograph what you make. A window, a plain surface and a little patience do most of it.
